In March of 2018, Google found and immediately took down a bug in Google+. In basic terms, the bug was found in one of the Google+ People APIs which means that app developers had access to people's personal profiles.

Google cannot confirm that developers were actually aware of the bug or even took advantage of it, however, it's estimated that up to 500,000 Google+ accounts could have been affected.

The data available to developers due to the bug was static, optional Google+ Profile fields like users’ names, email address, occupation, gender, and age were available. The breach did not include any other type of data a user could put or connect to Google+ or other services.

Furthermore, a report in the Wall Street Journal states that Google didn’t announce this bug initially in fear of regulatory scrutiny. Google+ was already not living up to expectations; Google admits that since the introduction to the internet, it had not been doing well. Consumer and developer adoption was even lower than what had been guessed. Ninety percent of user sessions only lasted 5 seconds.

Following this security breach, Google shut down Google+ and will keep it this way for the next 10 months. It is estimated that Google+ will be back up and running in August of next year.

More information will be coming out soon, so stay tuned if you want to know what will happen with Google+. Will it even come back? What will it look like? Do you think you were affected by this security breach?
